Last years Dakar had the Czech Josef Machacek became the winner of Quad category in the Rally Dakar. The Czech Yamaha rider didn’t find a challenger in his class for the fifth time! Machacek triumphed with the luxurious lead of two and a half hour to the next quad competitor. At the age of fifty Machacek was one of the oldest participants of the south American adventure, but he showed the muffler pipe to his younger rivals. With 25 quad / ATV at the start his Yamaha was the first to see the checkered flag. A category record will be equaled when 27 quads line up at the 2010 Dakr start in Buenos Aires. Josef Machacek is the record holder for Dakar wins heading into this 32nd edition. The Czech rider could tie the former motorcycle champion Stephane Peterhansel and truck ace Karel Loprais with six victories in the same category at this edition of the Dakar.
A dominator on the tracks, this quad specialist with an extreme philosophy of doing it alone without assistance on the Dakar, will have to be careful not to get caught out by his own undoing. He will also have to keep an eye on his closet rival in 2009, Marcos Patronelli, who according to all observers has clearly gained confidence after such a convincing first Dakar. The flag bearer of the Argentinean delegation will have added support from older brother Alejandro, who too has ambitions in this year of the country’s bi-continual.
But Machacek could also face a threat coming from his own camp. Team boss, Rafal Sonik, who prepares the quads himself, finished 3rd last year and then there is fellow Czech and newcomer Martin Plechaty. 4th in 2009, Hubert Deltrieu will also battle for a podium finish. After not attaining his objectives with an undersized quad last year, the Frenchman totally reworked the engine in his machine in order to compete with equal equipment. And then there is Camelia Liparoti, the lone female in the category, who comes into the event as the sport’s newly crowned world champion. The Franco-Italian will consider making it to the finish in Buenos Aires as a victory in itself.
