Baja 300 Powerdays

Fans of off-road motorsport are in for a real treat later this month as the mega stars of the SCORE International Offroad Series fire up the high-performance engines of their Trophy Trucks and Buggies and perform for the first time on European soil at the BAJA 300 POWERDAYS event in the Lausitz region, south of Berlin.

Joining these 800 horsepower desert monsters that are usually found contesting the popular off-road racing series in the USA and Mexico, will be World Rally Championship cars, motocross and enduro bikes and riders, including BMW Motorrad Motorsport’s Andi Lettenbichler and Anders Eriksson, who will both compete on the G 450 X on the fourth weekend in July.

The BAJA 300 POWERDAYS is the brainchild of legendary German rally ace Armin Schwarz, who has been successfully contesting the SCORE International Offroad Series with a 550 hp Buggy powered by a 4.2-litre BMW M5 engine. The former European Rally Champion wants to bring together all the different off-road motorsport disciplines in one big event to give fans a taste of what to expect when a European version of the famous Baja 500 and 1000 races is launched in 2010.

“Visitors to the BAJA 300 POWERDAYS will see US superstars take on rally and motocross champions for the first time in Europe. We’ve designed and constructed a series of overlapping tracks that will guarantee spectacular action from all disciplines,” said Armin. “To see some of the top US Baja drivers come face to face with the World Rally Championship elite and top motocross and enduro riders will be a fantastic experience for the fans. I’m delighted that BMW Motorrad will be present at this event, as it takes place on German soil, close to Berlin. Furthermore, as I used to race motorcycles before I moved on to rally cars, it is a dream for me to have the official works team participating.”

Andi Lettenbichler and Anders Eriksson will have their work cut out for them at the open-cast mine in Lausitz, where the event takes place on 24-26 July. A star-studded two-wheeled line-up awaits them, including the KTM works team, with double Dakar winner Cyril Despres, motocross freestyler Petr Pilat, multiple German Enduro Champion Markus Kehr, and Husqvarna works riders Andrea Cervellin and Christophe Martin. Not that any of these big names bother ‘Letti’, as he is approaching the event with his usual blend of optimism and enthusiasm.

“To be honest, it’s difficult to know what to expect, because this is the first time an event like this has taken place in Germany. One thing is for sure, it will be great fun to watch and even better to ride in! Anders and myself will be out there to represent BMW Motorrad and show bike and car fans that we are very much part of the off-road scene now with the BMW G 450 X.”

A 2,350-metre off-road track has been created to allow fans the best views from all vantage points around the circuit, where many wild and wonderful vehicles will be competing at the same time! Six drivers from each faction of Baja trucks, rally cars and off-road bikes will be in the starting line up and the special layout allows for each vehicle category to compete at the same time. There are special ‘crossroads’ where the bikes and buggies will jump high above the WRC cars (which are more comfortable closer to the dirt) as well as corners that are banked up to three metres high and especially designed for the Trophy Trucks and Buggies to roar through at breathtaking speeds. Compact gravel and tricky corners await the World Rally Cars.

With 850 hp Trophy Trucks competing alongside 640 hp Buggies, high-tech World Rally Championship cars, motocross, freestyle and enduro bikes, it’s no wonder that the event has attracted the interest of Germany’s RTL TV channel, which will be broadcasting the BAJA 300 POWERDAYS as part of its coverage of the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday 26 July from 12.30.
